Treatment Pathway
Consultation
Consultation with our restorative specialist Dr Kash Ubhi usually takes about an hour. This consultation consists of:
- A detailed discussion of your medical and dental history and your aims for treatment.
- A comprehensive examination, including an oral health and cancer screen. The examination will enable us to assess the problem and treatment options and to check viability of such treatments.
- The consultation may also include x-rays.
- You will have any necessary x-rays taken so that we can then begin the process of assessing the bone volume available for implants. At this stage we can usually advise you on your suitability for implants and begin the detailed discussion of the different treatment options available to you, how implants work and the stages and costs involved.
- More complex cases sometimes require more time to plan properly. We may need to make some models of your teeth and to consider further investigations such as detailed 3D imaging prior to making any decisions. All the costs involved with this will be explained to you.
- Once planning is complete you will be sent a comprehensive treatment plan outlining everything that was discussed at your initial assessment and detailing all the timings and costs of your treatment. This helps reiterate the information you were given during your initial assessment.
Implant Placement
Implant treatment is normally in two stages: In the first stage the implant (a small titanium post) is gently placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Over the next few weeks the bone gradually grows around and bonds with the post providing stability. Unlike a traditional plate or bridge, the dental implant is actually anchored to your jaw giving it great strength.
Sedation is also available for anxious patients
Implant Restoration
Once integration with the jawbone is complete we can move on to the second stage: attaching the crown, bridge or denture to the implant. These are tailor-made to fit the implants that have been placed. Implants can be used in the replacement of single or multiple teeth; or to stabilise or replace dentures.
Aftercare
It is imperative that you show your teeth the same care as you would natural teeth. This will involve regular maintenance at home as well as check-ups at the practice.
